International Day for Peace

Women in Black (WiB) acknowledging the work of women peacemakers

21 September is the International Day of Peace, established in 1981 by the United Nations to strengthen the ideals of peace by observing 24 hours of nonviolence and ceasefire.

Women around the world bring their skills and experiences of peace building to every level of society. WiB urge the UK Government to acknowledge this and to ensure that women are given a key role in reporting, planning and implementing policies and practices that safeguard women and girls from violence and warfare.

Women in Black is a world-wide network of women committed to peace with justice. We actively challenge injustice, war, militarism and other forms of violence towards women and girls. We are not an organisation, but a means of communicating and a model for action. http://london.womeninblack.org/

Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF), was established after the International Congress of Women in The Hague in 1915. Among its key work, WILPF UK has been lobbying governments on issues including women’s participation in peacebuilding, anti-war, militarism in schools and the links between militarism and climate change. https://www.wilpf.org/

MADRE is an international women’s human rights organization and feminist fund. We partner with community-based women’s groups worldwide facing war and disaster. Currently supporting women in Afghanistan. https://www.madre.org/
